About - Biography

Natalie Hardy, from Canberra, Australian Capital Territory (Ngunnawal Country), is a versatile dance artist and aspiring teacher known for their specialities in contemporary dance, unique improvisational vocabulary, partnering, and floorwork/acrobatic practices. From an early age, Natalie trained in artistic gymnastics, where they went to compete at a national level representing the club Canberra City Gymnastics. While competing as an all-rounder gymnast, Natalie quickly became drawn to the dance elements of the floor apparatus and discovered the way movement can eloquently embody music, meaning, and emotions.

By uncovering this desire to express and interpret emotions and worldviews through movement, Natalie began exploring a range of interdisciplinary artistic possibilities throughout their secondary schooling, such as visual arts, public art design, architecture, and creative writing. Acknowledging their passion and achievements in the fine arts, Natalie felt challenged on ways to express their thoughts with more rigour and still felt drawn towards movements of the human body and its connection to improving mental states. With this internal discovery, Natalie began actively researching contemporary dance performances and attended one of QL2 Dance’s Quantum Leap Ensemble Performance seasons at the Playhouse, Canberra Theatre Centre in 2021. The performance in question titled ‘REBEL’ explored the theme of freedom of speech, while hinting at issues around civil rights, climate change, and wars. After watching this performance, Natalie felt drawn towards the way movement was able to capture and convey powerful messages where each dancer moved with attentive gaze, determination, and purpose. Taking the inspired mindset from this performance, Natalie began actively attending classes at QL2 Dance in early 2022 and auditioned for all the available performance seasons. During their time at QL2 Dance, Natalie collaborated with and performed in works by Melanie Lane, Ruth Osborne, and Lilah and Steve Gow (Synergy Styles). In addition to performing choreographed works, under the guidance of Ruth Osbourne, Natalie choreographed a trio work titled “Vulnerability of the Individual,” which was recognised in Catapult Dance’s 2022 Hunter Choreographic Awards, and awarded “Excellent Creativity”. These experiences led Natalie to become interested in the collaborative nature of contemporary dance while embellishing in the way young people could come together and express difficult topics through the physicality of movement.

After graduating secondary school in 2022, Natalie moved to Naarm (Melbourne) and studied at The Victorian College of the Arts, The University of Melbourne, in a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) degree. During their study from 2023-2025, Natalie explored the effects authentic movement and improvisation has on mental states under the guidance of Dr. Phillip Adams (founder and artistic director of BalletLab), Kialea-Nadine Williams (pervious dancer at Phoenix Dance Theatre and Australian Dance Theatre), Julie Minaai (recognised as an artist of ‘Exceptional Promise’ by Arts Council England), and Nicole Corea (previous dancer at Lar Lubovitch Dance Company).

Whilst pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) degree at VCA, in 2024, Natalie toured and performed VCA repertoire choreography by Nicole Corea and Anna Smith to Surakarta and Yogyakarta in Indonesia, alongside six other selected dancers. Natalie also undertook creation projects in the 2025 VCA Dance Company with Dr Phillip Adams, Jill Crovisier (founder and Artistic Director of JC Movement Production), and Melanie Lane, where Natalie performed Phillip Adams' work “FOUNTAIN” in Melbourne’s 2025 RISING Festival. Natalie was also involved in the 2025 Yellow Wheel Company, performing works choreographed by Kyall Shanks and Jacqui Maida.

In their final year of study, Natalie then experienced a week-long secondment with Tasdance during the 2025 “Influencer” performance season in Hobart/Nipaluna, working closely with Adam Wheeler and Kyall Shanks. Natalie also began researching and structuring scores for improvisational performances “(Un)Tangled” and “(Un)Changed,” where Chunky Move’s artistic director, Antony Hamilton, then selected Natalie as an Intern for the end months of 2025.

With Natalie’s keen approach to interdisciplinary practices, construction of unique improvisational scores, and motivation for exploring the impacts movement has on mental states, Natalie Hardy is set to share their knowledge with future generations through both performance and education.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land in which I work, learn, teach, dance, and play, the Ngunnawal people, and pay my respects to their elders, past, present, and future.
